Remembering Pablo...

We are here today to celebrate the life of Pablo Picasso, the famed Betta fish. Pablo died Monday, July 9, 2007, of unknown causes. His age was at least twenty-six months. He will be mourned by many.

Though Pablo's exact origins are unknown, his owner liked to claim he was born near the equator, in the tropical waters around Borneo. Mistakenly named after the famed Spanish painter Pablo Picasso, due to his lack of any visible ears, the little blue Betta was destined for greatness.

The first known recorded sighting of Pablo was in the Fish Bowl region of Wal-Mart, where he spent many mostly boring days. After escaping from there with most of his youth still intact, Pablo moved into an apartment in May of 2005. A few short months later, he moved again, this time into the two-bedroom-one-bath bachelor paradise where he would spend the rest of his days.

Originally intended to be nothing more than a Mother's Day present, Pablo used his charm to convince his owner to keep him. Hopelessly attached to the little feller after only a few hours, Pablo's owner would go out and buy another Betta and another aquarium to be given for the Mother's Day gift.

Often lauded by his owner as the "most handsome fish in the world," Pablo developed many talents, such as being able to hear footsteps on the stairs, and looking irresistibly cute.

Pablo was a fun-loving fish whose preferred pasttimes included swimming, eating, and napping. He also seemed fascinated by the television and watching his owner dance. Pablo did not appear to be a fan of car rides or cameras. Some of his favorite things were Betta Gold pellets and distilled water, and he was known to occasionally nibble on a Fruity Pebble.

Pablo was a friend and a companion. A pet in a place where no pets were allowed. He brought life, warmth, and laughter to his home. His passing leaves a huge void. And he will be missed always.

  1. Pablo used his charm to convince his owner to keep him.

Pablo knew exactly what he was doing when he turned that charm on, it sounds like. He had a good life, and someone who adored him.

    I'm so sorry, Bone.

    *HUGS*

You gave Pablo a good life... and in turn, he added some to your life as well. Sounds like the perfect pet/owner relationships.

  2. So sad, sorry to hear about Pablo. Beta fish are so beautiful but never seem to live very long, at least not as long as the average gold fish. It is hard to lose a pet, even one that you can not cuddle.
There are many fish in the sea, but none will ever be as special as your first.

I feel as if I know Pablo.

  10. I'm certain he had a great life, Sir Bone. Your love for him shines through not only in this post but in others where you've talked about your beloved fish.

    This was beautifully written.
No person, or fish, could ask for a better memorial.

You have turned his passing into a celebration and given memories of him to those who never knew him.

I'm so, so sorry for your loss.

  11. When Goldie died (a cheap gold fish my 4yr old won at a halloween carnival)- she had survived over a year, and moved with us from one house to the other...so when she passed, we buried her in the flower bed and had a little service for her.
I'll never forget the tears my little one shed over that little fish.
Now a beautiful hosta blooms where we buried her. I think of Goldie every year when that hosta comes up.

  12. Oh no! Not Pablo!! :( He sounds like he was a delightful companion and a good fish...I'm sorry :( (((HUGS)))
It sounds like he had a long life, though...we never had very good luck with fish (might have had something to do with the fact that the children would sneak fish food in when I wasn't looking). Rest in peace, dear little Pablo.

  13. I'm sorry about your loss...he was a good man, I mean fish. But you know it was Vincent Van Gogh that cut off his ear. Sorry, had to throw that in.

  14. Pia: Thanks. It hasn't been a good couple of weeks for me and pets.

Renee: Thank you. I didn't realize I'd mentioned him that much until I searched my archives for "Pablo" and more than twenty entries popped up :)

    {{{HUGS}}}

Avery Laine: Thanks. I wrote it as much for me as I did anything, so I wouldn't forget.

Mayden: Aww, that's very sweet. It's amazing how attached you can get to them.

Jennifer: Thank you. {{{HUGS))) He was a wonderful little friend and I think he had a pretty long life for a fish.

Carnealian: Thanks. And yes, I know. Thus, the "mistakenly named after..." :)

  15. A young woman on another blog just lost her second fish and wrote about it. Sorry you lost Pablo.

  16. But Picasso was the more talented artist, in my book, so you did good.

I remember the goldfish I had in high school. She'd spit rocks at the glass to say hello, and get excited whenever I walked in the room. And people say fish aren't friendly... what do they know? I'm sure Pablo's life was better for having shared it with you.

  17. Awww, Pablo was such a cutey (looks like he could have been my late betta Max's twin, or something), poor litte guy.

  18. Oh, I am so sorry Bone. Pablo was the best damn Betta ever. He will be remembered fondly whenever people speak of Bettas.

  21. Dude (as I beat my chest with closed fist) it's tough, huh? One of mine died this week as well. It was not a peaceful death though. In fact, not all of him was still there when I scooped him from the tank to place him in the hearse to sea. His eyes were bulged, his mouth had been removed (mostly before his death). I think his death was over due. Mostly because I was hoping that he would not suffer too much. I had the guy for almost 5 years.

    Thanks for sharing man

  24. Marcia: Aww, I'm sorry to hear that :-/

Gay: But Picasso was the more talented artist, in my book, so you did good.

:) Thanks. Yeah, it's kinda neat how they seem to have their own personality.

GirlFPS: Thank you. He was a cutie, for sure.

Lass: He will be remembered fondly whenever people speak of Bettas.

:-) You guys are making me smile with some of these comments. Thank you.

Arlene: Well, I'm not planning on it anytime soon. Maybe someday.

    Sizzle: Thanks, Sizzle.

Jeremy: Yes, it is tough. He'd seemed like he didn't feel well for awhile though, and I hated to see him like that, too.

    Xinher: Thank you.

Kate: Thanks, Kate. And you are not a dud :)

  25. I am dearly afraid that Cappy has put that same spell of ownership on my brother who is fish-sitting.

Sorry to hear that Pablo is gone from us...Loved his interview and will always be remembered. Cappy sends his regards as well.

  26. Tagster: Uh oh, you may have a problem getting Cappy back. I think I saw something like this on Lifetime once, except it was a child and not a fish :)

    Keep us updated on Cappy.

    Burg: Thank you.

  27. I'm sorry to hear about Pablo. He had a good life, I'm sure - and appreciated you taking such good care of him. I'm also sure that the company he provided you earned him a great place in fish-heaven (you know what I mean, anyway). He was special to you - and I'm sorry to hear of his passing.

    Take care!
