Here comes the sun

Riddle me this: Somewhere in Alabama today, a three-week-old child asks, "What's that in the sky, Dad?" "That's the sun," is the reply. The child had never seen it. Smart kid? Well, he was talking at three weeks. On the other hand, he didn't know what the sun was. Also, the dad was the child's mother. So maybe not so smart after all.

The sun finally came out here today, for the first time in three weeks. Thank goodness, too, because the constant cloudiness and gray was starting to fool my body into thinking it was winter. Which would have put me in danger of catching a case of the non-seasonal Januarys. Which is rare, not to mention more resistant than the regular Januarys.

How bad has it been? During a recent performance of Annie, when they got to the line "The sun will come out tomorrow" an angry audience member stood up and yelled, "You lie!"

Twenty-two consecutive days with rain combined with the Darryls each somehow acquiring a girlfriend has also cut into my already less-than-sterling golf game, er, social life. And when you add to that the fact that football is now on TV every night of the week but Tuesday and Wednesday, well let's just say that I don't get out much.

This makes it all the more difficult to understand how I missed the season premiere of The Office last week. Fortunately, you can watch everything online now, which precludes any need that I might have had to purchase one of those newfangled DVR players, for now anyway. Is this a good time to admit that I may or may not still use a VCR to record things on occasion?

It's hard for me to commit to very many TV shows at one time. They're like girls. I can only handle so many. There's a long-term obligation involved, not to mention the emotional strain some of these shows put on me. I watch Mad Men and Burn Notice when I remember, which usually winds up being about once every three weeks. Always The Office. And then parts of General Hospital during the day. I can't commit to any more. Pretty soon I've spread myself too thin and no one's happy.

Getting back to the Darryls, what is up with the girlfriends? I watched the Newhart series finale. I don't recall the Darryls ever getting married. Did I miss something?

Maybe it's time for me to spread my wings, move to Seattle and have my own show, a la Frasier Crane. It would be a spin-off--a reality series about Larry trying to make it on his own, sans the Darryls. It could be called Just Larry.

Is this the end of life as I know it...with the Darryls? Would you cry? Will I?

Stay tuned.

"Little darling, it seems like years since it's been clear. Here comes the sun. Here comes the sun. And I say it's all right..."

  1. I'm crying because you have that song stuck in my head now.

I'm pretty sure the first time I read that I thought it said "I can only juggle so many."

I feel your pain on The Office. I was late to get into the craze, until my friend Judge practically forced it on me. Now I'm addicted. But that means I have a lot of lost ground to make up for. In fact, I just recently finally got to see the Jim/Pam proposal!!!! All is well now in my TV world. (Well not quite, as I missed OTH Monday night, but that's a whole other story.)

I might cry about the Darryls. That seems weird. Girlfriends? Sheesh. What are thinking?

    (Don't answer that.)

  3. So the Darryls have girlfriends, the world might stop spinning or at least slow down. On the up side they now have increased to the nth degree how many women you could meet.

My show is Bones. I hate to miss it.

Don't move to the Seatle it is so 1990s.

    LOL

I agree with PennyCandy. Listen to the smart lady.

    (Plus, you're cooler than Fraiser.)

  5. I agree, I will not buy a DVR b/c you can find everything online. For example, last night I watched Castle which comes on Monday nights. No need for DVR.

I'm happy the sun finally came out. YEAAA!

So, if you aren't playing golf, watching The Office, or sending me packages...what do you do? :)

  6. it's been crazy here in Atlanta- but we're hanging in there.

I like your lack of commitment in all areas of your life. Consistent-ness is next to Godliness, right? No? Hmmmm. ;)

  7. I'm glad you finally saw the sun. It's been pretty elusive here too.

I don't have any advise about the tv shows as I don't watch them.

  8. this place is always cloud, but not always rainy, sometimes it snows... I never thought of girls being like TV shows--and I'm going to quit trying to figure that one out.

  9. Murf - So that song has some sentimental value to you? Aw, that's sweet :)

TC - Yeah, the proposal was pretty cool, although I'm a little worried that they won't be as funny now that they are together and having a baby. I just don't like when comedies go and get all sappy, although nearly everyone eventually does. Except Seinfeld.

Well, I've already been crying about it :)

PennyCandy - On the up side they now have increased to the nth degree how many women you could meet.

    Oh, I don't know about that. Maybe where n equals 1 :)

I've caught Bones a time or two. I liked it. There's just so many of those crime/drama/investigation type shows on. I usually just prefer to go for the real thing and watch A&E.

Actonbell - Glad you got a laugh out of that line. It was my last addition to the post. Trying to stay somewhat topical here :)

OKChick - OK, I feel much better now that I no I'm not the only person without DVR or TiVo.

Well, mostly watching football. And going to football games.

Cami - I'm nothing if not consistent. Very regimented. Stuck in a rut. Er, scratch that last one :)

Renee - Yes, I saw on the news where Colorado got snow. Congratulations?

Sage - I wouldn't advise trying to figure out anything I write. It's bound to be time-consuming, not to mention most likely futile.

  10. You go out and get some of that vitamin D. It might help increase the volume of femaleness you can handle at once too.

I missed the premiere of Heros. I figure it's like Star Trek must have been, a B grade show that you have to watch. That is available online, so I might be able to catch it.

I can only handle a couple as well and my assignment book is full with Dexter starting Sunday it's about all I can handle. I'm a lightweight.

  11. I will trade you 100F heat in So Cal for your Alabama rain.

I can't believe the Darryl's have girlfriends and yet you remain single. How is that even possible? Are we in some sort of parallel universe?

  12. I can only cope with one TV series at a time too. But I can't cope with watching them on TV... wait a week? No! Why do that when you can watch a whole season back to back on a grey Sunday?! We don't attach our TV to the ariel for that reason - we just get anything we want to watch from the library on DVD. It does help not being a sports fan though.

It's hard when a single friend finds a partner sometimes, isn't it? You feel like you lose them a little bit. But I don't think you need your own spin-off. It's just time for season 2.

  14. an angry audience member stood up and yelled, "You lie!"
Admit it Bone, it was you :) That's one of the ten best topical humor lines of all time. You've obviously been watching Letterman & Jon Stewart--if not in real life in some parallel one

  15. The yelling at Annie line was truly priceless, Bone!

  16. Cooper - I don't get the premium channels, so I've never seen Dexter. I do have a couple seasons of Curb Your Enthusiasm on DVD, though. I'm sure you're not surprised.

Xinh - I think it has something to do with Jupiter and Neptune aligning in Aquarius earlier this year :)

J Adamthwaite - I could probably handle that with the few TV shows that I do make it a point to watch. But that definitely would not work for me with football :)

Yeah, you definitely drift apart a bit. But such is life, I suppose.

Shelby - Yeah, it's really cut into my golf time. And I need all the practice I can get.

Pia - Why, thank you. I usually remember to watch Letterman a couple nights a week--at least his monologue and Top Ten. I haven't watched Stewart and Colbert in quite awhile. No particular reason. Just got out of the routine.

Mama Zen - Thanks! I'm quite certain that's the first time I've ever referenced Annie on here.

  17. No sentimental value. Just a horrible song to have stuck in your head.

  18. We haven't had sun in a day and two nights and I'm losing it. I just realized that had it been me who didn't have sun for 23 days you would have heard about that I don't how many times...Says something about you Bone

Fast Forward--new show and amazing--ordered the book and between the time I ordered it and got the confirmation it was back ordered ten days

They say Lost is based on the book. I have read at least ten theories why. Now you know what I do when it's pouring

  19. It's Fall BONE- get your fall line up in order! TIVO!!
I'd be happy to get more than 5 channels...I want to watch Mad Men and Real Housewives and Lifetime ..it's like going cold turkey for a TV Junkie
Thurday night is a dilema for me I like the new fastforward show and survivior and the office then I have stuff going on...

I think your next post should be a girlfriend application.

I'm sure you would get a lot of response and who knows Bone you might not miss the Daryll's so much.

  20. I am grateful to have my DVR. If I didn't have it, I wouldn't be able to keep track of Hell's Kitchen, FlashForward, Lost, Community, Top Chef, or Project Runway. Oh, let's not forget Amazing Race or Being Human. Or The Daily Show or The Colbert Report.

They're like girls. I can only handle so many.

Good God, I'm a television series whore I suppose. Thank you, Bone, for helping me come to terms with my addiction.

  21. I like Larry David. I am pretty much stuck on premium channels. Seems to me they would suit you.

LOL! This one made me laugh out loud. I agree...there are too many shows. I tape so many of them, and then feel stressed that I can't find the time to watch them. Hope you're well, Bone -- I went on vacation a couple weeks back, and have had a hard time getting back into the swing of the blog world. Have a wonderful day~~
