I'm not sure I remember how to do this

It's been awhile. I'd like to tell you I have a great reason for being absent, like I quit my job and have been under the tutelage of David Gibson in preparation for this year's World Scrabble Championships. But I have no grand reason. No excuse.

Although my hours at work changed a few weeks ago. I now have to be in at Brandt-Leland each morning by 6 AM. It's kinda thrown my whole routine off. OK, so one excuse.

My first week working the new hours, I woke up one morning at 5:52. I shot out of bed and rushed into the bathroom in a panic. As I brushed my teeth, my mind raced. Why hadn't my alarm gone off? Or had it, and I turned in off in a semi-conscious haze? And what about my phone? I never turn my phone alarm off.... except for weekends... which must make this a... Saturday! It's moments like these that never allow me to think too highly of myself.

I've always been a night owl and I'm not sure I'll ever be fully transformed into one of those early worms. But there is one good thing about the new hours: I'm off in time to catch General Hospital most days now.

Speaking of, I'm pretty sure I had a small coronary when I read the headline "ABC To Cancel Two Of Its Long-Running Soaps" a couple weeks ago. Thankfully, GH survived. And so did I. Did you know we may experience hundreds of tiny heart attacks and never even realize it? On second thought, maybe that was hundreds of tiny earthquakes...

Spring was nice this year. It arrived on a Wednesday and was gone by the following Sunday. Like a girl you go out with a couple of times and she's not your favorite but then when she's gone you start thinking she must have something going for her if she's not waiting around on you. It would have been nice if spring had stayed a little longer. Not that I would ever complain about summer. Or girls.

I earned my first sunburn of the season last weekend at the Alabama A-Day game. You might recall that's where ninety-thousand-plus fans show up to basically watch the team practice. Yeah, there's not a whole lot to do around here.

Nephew Bone went to the game. He's learned to put his hand over his heart for the national anthem. So on over in the game a bit as the band was playing the Alabama fight song, I looked down and Nephew Bone was standing with his hand over his heart until they were done. My heart melted a little.

Otherwise, I've been golfing a bit, running a bit, and going to bed earlier than I ever dreamed possible. (Not that I have ever actually had a dream about going to bed early.) And even though I would think about blogging, it became easier and easier to let it go for another day.

It's kinda like a relationship where you stop communicating and walls start to form. And you know you need to talk but with each passing day it's just easier to watch TV or read. And so you let the distance continue to grow until finally... You know, actually these relationship analogies are starting to hit a little too close to home.

So anyway, I'm back. For better or for worse.

And if there should ever be another prolonged hiatus, just assume the Scrabble thing.

"A good muse is hard to find. Living one word to the next, one line at a time. There's more to life than whiskey. There's more to words than rhyme. Sometimes nothing works, sometimes nothing shines, like Hemingway's whiskey..."

  1. I think I am your opposite. If I don't sit down at a keyboard and pound out a blog post a few times a week I go into withdrawal. In fact, I go through life experiencing things and thinking, that was a post, there is another post....

  2. Love your very Bone observations on life
And the heart attack/earthquake analogy cracks me up for reasons best lest unexplored
Thing everybody has done the "get up and get ready to go to work" only to realize it's Saturday or worse==late evening as you find yourself at the subway wondering why people are coming out of all the stores. OK that was me and it only happened once but was unforgettable

  3. As previously discussed, I am a huge fan of GH but my silly "job" gets in the way of watching it regularly. (You like how I put job in quotation marks to reduce its importance?)
    HOW.thefreak.EVER.
I have already set my DVR to record this Thursday's episode with Luke's intervention. I am so excited. We'll need to compare notes afterward.

  4. Yeah that TCB can get in the way of having a life.

  5. Can we change lives for a week or two? I love your reflections on life, Bone, and it's good having you back blogging.

  6. I won't chastise you for not blogging. It's nice to see you back.

Nephew Bone, he sounds like a heart melter for sure. Enjoy him .....soon he will be a teenager.

I've never watched a daytime soap, but my great grandmother watched All My Children from the first show. I guess it's lucky she is dead, it would devastate her.

I'd hate to be the one to have to console you over the loss of GH. Anyone would despise that job I imagine. Lucky everyone it remains.

  9. Love that line, " a good muse is hard to find".

I get up every morning at 415am and head to the gym before work.
Its just a way of life.
but I also go to bed at 8pm.

    Glad to see you back.

  10. I DVR'd Thursday's GH. It was brilliant. Tony Geary's in that league of actors belonging to James Spader and Alan Bates. It was one scene and amazing

I only say this because full episodes of GH can now be found on its website--so tornado or none you don't have to miss any--yes I looked for you and was willing to email ABC and say that my friend missed the intervention because of the tornado. What are you going to do for him?

I know that's the least of everything but....I'm not putting in the link because it has an ad that goes off automatically when you click the link. So don't watch it at work!!!!!!

  11. Bone,
I hope you are okay. Forget the blogging hiatus - I'm talking about tornadoes. Anyway, a Georgia girl is thinking about an Alabama friend. Hope you are safe and well.

  12. Ed - You are my opposite. You're Bizarro Bone :)

Pia - Thanks much. It happened to me at least one other time, years ago. That particular time, I was already in the shower before I realized it was Saturday. I've also done the afternoon-nap-wake-up-and-think-it's-AM-instead-of-PM at least twice.

Cami - I do like how you put job in quotation marks. I also hope you stopped and made air quotes while typing that :)

We do need to compare notes. It's by far the most interesting GH storyline since I've been back watching.

Renee - Thankfully, I have plenty of crackers in my briefcase ;)

Sage - You're offer was tempting at first, but then I'd probably drown while canoeing or end up in a body cast after cross-country skiing.

Cooper - Thanks, Miss Cooper. There'll be plenty to chastise me for later, I'm sure.

I know! I'm trying. Something tells me these are the glory years :)

I haven't watched AMC in many, many years (honest), but still it's hard to fathom a world with no Erica Kane.

And I'm sorry for not checking in sooner and letting everyone know I was OK.

KittyCat - I may not be far behind you, as the heavy yawns seem to be starting earlier and earlier each night.

Pia - That Luke/Lucky scene during the intervention was outstanding. So glad Jonathan Jackson came back, as he is and should be the only Lucky.

Charlotta - Thanks, friend. I'm fine. And I apologize for not checking in here sooner.
