Three Word Wednesday #4

Each week, I will post three (or more) random words. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to write something using all of those words. It can be a few lines, a story, a poem, anything. Don't spend too much time on it. It doesn't have to be perfect. The idea is to let your mind wander and write what it will. I'll also write something using the same three words.

Be sure to leave a comment if you participate.

This week's words are:
splurge
alley
laugh

Claire sat at the table, patting her foot, sloshing the wine in her glass back and forth, growing more impatient by the second. Over the past hour, her look had gradually changed from one of icy mischief to anger. Where was he? Late again. What a shock.

She had prepared a cajun shrimp dish, his favorite. She wore her short black cocktail dress, her sexiest. Tonight, they would dine by candlelight.

After dinner, she would present him with an envelope. He would open it and see the photograph. The one she had snapped from the alley downtown, across the street from the hotel. And the look on his face would be priceless. It's called the last laugh.

Then she would stand up and walk out the door, never saying a word. Their marriage would be over. It was already over. But after tonight, they'd only communicate thru lawyers and mediators and third parties.

She was mostly over the hurt. Now it was more about anger. And revenge. And getting away from him. She was thankful they'd never had children. It would be less messy.

As she continued to wait, she thought. About being free. Starting over. She planned to take a trip. To Europe. Or the Caribbean. She would splurge. Buy herself a car. Or some jewelry. Something nice. She deserved it.

In all her thinking that evening, it never crossed her mind that he'd never make it home.

"And the lightning flashes in her eyes. And he knows that she knows. And the thunder rolls..."

  1. Your creativity never fails to astound me, Bone. This is amazing. ("Fine job" sounds too petty.)

  4. So it sounds at first like a sweet, romantic dinner. What a switch! You really do have a lot of talent: this was great!

  6. Brilliant!

One question: Do you come up with the three words before or after you have written your entry?

  7. OCG: Never? Even on The Cows song?

    Carmen: I like twists :)

Pia: I'm trying to be shorter, more concise. I've had lots of good advice :)

    Traveling Chica: Thanks, Chica.

Heather B: Aww, HB. *Blushing* How sweet.

Hotpinksox: Ah, this was asked once before. Someone emails the three words to me. Then I write something from them. I found this week's words to be particularly difficult to tie together.

  9. You write this with such insight into what a woman might actually do. I love that.

My Writing exercise is up and running.

  10. I didn't see the "romantic evening" turning into the confrontation though...so you had me there. But I'm not sure if it was predictable or if I've read too much like this before...I did see that he wasn't coming back before you got there.

I like the way it's written though and would enjoy reading more of the story.

Perhaps I'm getting too cynical or something because I can usually tell how it's going to end before I get there with almost every story I read.

  11. Did it. Mine will be up on Friday which isn't Wednesday, but...

Has anybody told you that you have the single most difficult site to leave a comment on?

I think that yours was almost perfect for a writing exercise---perfect really. Just two sentences that I would change, and that would make it not predictable at all.

But it's a writing exercise, and perfection ain't allowed.

  12. Ms. Sizzle: He does?! :)

    Xinh: Thanks.

Dorothy: Well, I'll take that as a compliment. I was thinking as I was writing this, what do I know about what a woman would do? I'll attribute it to my years of watching General Hospital.

Renee: That happens to me sometimes with movies. I hate that.

Pia: Uh, I think someone has mentioned that before. Actually, I think it was you :)'

That's what I love about the exercise. I can just write it and not nitpick and go back and edit it four or five times.

  13. Oh yeah, movies too. The sad part is that I'm watching a movie on TV and I'll glance up at the clock to see what time it is, and if the movie is due to be over in say 20 minutes, I know that they'll have everything figured out and by 10 min to go they're wrapping up the happily ever after part.
And if they haven't gotten to the figuring everything out at 20 min til, then I know it's to be continued... DH hates that and I giggle 'cuz I knew it was coming.

  14. I've posted something new on my blog.

  15. Renee: That happens to me when I'm watching poker. Someone will go all-in and it'll be like five minutes until the top of the hour, and I'll be like, crap!

    Lindsy: Saw it. Commented :)
