Today, Thanksgiving. Tomorrow...

A new section of links has been added to the sidebar. Notice anything different? O:-)

I hope that you all had a good Thanksgiving. This year was a bit different for me, but I won't go into that. The food was good, had plenty to eat, and of course Mom sent home leftovers that I will be enjoying for the next few days.

This day always makes me think of so many things and brings to mind so many memories. I always think of Thanksgivings past. I think of family members who were here then, but now are gone. When I was a kid, I would always try to talk enough people into playing football out in the yard. After enough pestering, I could usually round up a handful of cousins and uncles for a game which always seemed too short to me. I think of those who can't be home for the holidays. I think of anyone who might spend this day alone, never seeing another person all day. I hope that there aren't very many people who experience that, but I am sure there are some. As wonderful and lively as the holidays are, I imagine that they can be very lonely and depressing for some. I hate that. Even today, I thought of a friend who might not have anywhere to go or anyone to spend Thanksgiving with, but did I call? I thought about it a couple of times, but just never did. When I was younger, I always looked forward to the seeing family aspect of the holidays. Even as I got into my teens, I would always try to get Mom to invite people over for Memorial Day, Labor Day, any holiday that most people get off of work.

Watched a little bit of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade this morning. To me, that sort of signifies the beginning of the holiday season. Miracle On 34th Street was on TV this morning, too. My favorite Christmas movie. Watched most of A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving tonight. And of course, I watched football most all day. Would have been a much better day if the Cowboys kicker could make a freakin' 34-yard field goal! But anyway, the holidays are here. I enjoy being out amongst the crowds and shopping for Christmas. I like the decorations, the lights, Santa in the mall, the cold, the snow. (Not that we get much of the latter two.) I like it all. Everyone seems to be so busy and in such a hurry. It's easy to forget to stop and enjoy it. When I was a kid, Thanksgiving til Christmas seemed to take six months. Lately, it seems more like...

Today, Thanksgiving. Tomorrow, Christmas Eve. By the time I can reach out and grab it, I know it'll be already gone.

"By now in New York City, there's snow on the ground. And out in California, the sunshine's falling down. And maybe down in Memphis, Graceland's all in lights..."

  1. No snow in New York, now. A lot of wind and cold

The original Miracle on 34th Street? Mine too. I even found the street where they moved to at the end and tried to make my parents buy a house on the block

Didn't matter that there were no houses for sale; I wanted one on that block. We were actually looking for a house so my parents didn't laugh. At least not when I was around

Can not believe that you have GH linkage. No, no, no. Spent too many years getting over my GH obsession. Even used to get Soap Opera Digest. Stop me....

Love your empathy. Everybody who reads you knows that not only are you are a real straight single male, but one with great compassion and depth. So girls....

  2. When I got back to Albany last night there was snow on the ground and on the cars. I almost cried, not because it was beautiful, but because it was so freaking cold.

My holiday WAS lovely. Hope your's was the same, despite being a bit diffenent?
Reflection is good this time of year. I think it gets to be more a part of it every year. As well as thinking of others less fortunate. And being thankful for all that we have.

  4. I watched the Macy's parade too...from the kitchen where I was basting my big bird every 30 minutes. Tomorrow I'm headed out to meet Nick's brother. :) It was warm yesterday. Cooler today but still not "Holiday Weather". C'mon cold front! Happy Thanksgiving Bone!

  5. Pia: Yes, the original! For sure. The acting, the characters, could not have been any better, in my opinion.

Come on, Pia. Click on the links. :-)

Heather: Would love to have snow here. We might see flurries a couple of times a year.

Tenacious T: I may be in the minority, but I love Christmas music. Glad you had a good one. Sweet home Alabama!

Lass: Hope your big bird turned out well. The high was in the 40's here today. Think it's supposed to be around 60 tomorrow.

  7. You can have my cold front, Lass! BH has to drive home (5 hrs) in it. I just have to pick the kiddos up from school.

Bone- My favorite Christmas movie used to be "It's a Wonderful Life", but I'm finding "A Christmas Story" and now "Elf" are edging up there. Maybe because I have so much family turmoil, I just like to laugh over the holidays. "Buddy the Elf, what's your favorite color?" and "I want an official Red Ryder Carbine-action 200-shot range-model air rifle with a compass in the stock and this thing which tells time".
Also- in my hometown, we have a Lighted Christmas parade on our town square. All of the store fronts do live windows (this year's theme was Christmas movies). There is caroling, a chill in the air, heavy scent of pine, a "Rockerfeller" Christmas tree on the courthouse lawn (courthouse was built in 1896). They even have free cocoa, chili, and popcorn. If you really want to savor the holiday spirit, I recommend the Trans Siberian Orchestra's Christmas CD. It's a rock-style symphony that is really powerful and beautiful. You'll love it.

Pia- you hit the nail on the head. Bone's a rare breed. The caring and in tune male. I thought only my husband was that good. Glad to know someone else will get the fairytale too. I totally wish you were closer Bone, I have a ton of wonderful, beautiful single girlfriends I'd love to hook up with you.

  8. Jane: No fair. You can't just say you had 4 inches of snow without at least posting a pic :-)

Sallwood: I liked Elf too. Most all the little towns around here have a Christmas parade. Ours is mostly the local high school marching bands, a few floats, several tons of people riding horses and four-wheelers, and a fire engine with Santa on it. I may just check out the CD. Love holiday music.

"I have a ton of wonderful, beautiful single girlfriends I'd love to hook up with you."

In that case, I wish I was closer, too ;-)
